We welcome you to our traditional Japanese Machiya (town house)!!
This building is the historic merchant house known as Uoya-Manzo built in the mid 19th
century.
ln 2003 the residence was purchased and restored by the Tomonoura NPO with
financial support from American Express.
The renovation was designed by Japanese award winning film director Hayao Miyazaki.
Miyazaki has a long association with Tomonoura creating his internationally renowned
animation film “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea” （2007）while living in the Tomonoura
community.
His creative and inspirational energy can be seen throughout the beautifully restored
building.
